    ChatGPT: The University of Newcastle's Printed Solar project has made significant strides toward commercialization, with several notable demonstrations and partnerships: Public Installations: In 2018, the University partnered with CHEP to install a 200-square-metre rooftop array of printed solar panels, marking one of the first commercial-scale pilots of this technology in Australia. UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE Collaborations with Coldplay: In December 2024, the University collaborated with the band Coldplay to power their "Music of the Spheres" world tour using Printed Solar technology. An array of 500 square meters of the material was deployed at concert venues to help reduce the tour's carbon footprint. TRACE Advancements in Manufacturing: The University has developed roll-to-roll printing techniques, enabling rapid production of the solar material at a cost of less than $10 per square meter. This advancement positions the technology for broader commercial applications. UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE Despite these advancements, as of December 2024, the Printed Solar technology has not yet been widely commercialized for consumer products. The University continues to focus on scaling production and exploring diverse applications, including potential uses in disaster relief, electric vehicle charging, and integration into building materials.

    Why not just plant more trees to offset the co2.? Honest question.

    • @JFitable
      @JFitable 2 месяца назад

      It's a good question. Generally speaking, trees are carbon neutral. That means they aren't REALLY taking or adding carbon. The trees absorbs carbon as it grows, it releases carbon as it decays and dies. New trees absorb, die, rinse and repeat. In reality, some of that is buried into the ground and not released and theoretically carbon would be slowly sapped from the cycle until something introduces more. So what you need isn't planting more trees (which just temporarily holds carbon), what you need is to put the carbon back where you found it (in the ground). Not as easy as it was taking it out of the ground.

    • @universityofnewcastle
      @universityofnewcastle 2 месяца назад

      We need many things happening at once to offset CO2! Planting more trees is definitely a part of that 🌳

    • @JFitable
      @JFitable 2 месяца назад

      @@universityofnewcastle I agree that letting nature reclaim a lot of its territory would be good. Not for CO2 levels, but definitely for biodiversity and possibly climate redirection (or sustenance). Trees do a good job retaining water and have a big affect on the local biome.

    • @hunterno7704
      @hunterno7704 2 месяца назад

      Adding carbon as a fuel to separate the iron from the oxide does not make steel. It makes Iron and Carbon Dioxide gas. This method involves using electrolysis to separate the iron from the oxygen, which is released as pure oxygen gas. (O2)

    • @FriendsWeMade
      @FriendsWeMade 2 месяца назад

      CO2 is being used now so don't produce more. It's like y=0.5x+4 (Solar panels) vs y=x+2 (Keep on using fossil fuels).

    • @michaljancar339
      @michaljancar339 2 месяца назад

      You only need to produce those solar panels once. That's kinda the point of reusable energy sources.

  • @mikeoath9541
    @mikeoath9541 2 месяца назад

    So you're just going to heat it up? Not explaining how the scientifical process works but instead explaining why is kind of weird. Isn't this just a simple way of saying we can turn Rust into Iron using electrolysis? You still need carbon to make steel so I don't understand that part.

    • @SlatelayerTools
      @SlatelayerTools 2 месяца назад

      Not just heating it up. By running an electric current through an ionised mixture, in this case molten Fe2O3, the electrons from the current bind to the Fe+ ions, causing it to coalesce at the cathode (negative electron)in the form of molten iron, and the oxygen sheds its extra electrons to form O2 gas at the anode. This process is quite energy inefficient, as the ore must be liquid, which requires it to be more than 1,500 degrees Celsius. This can be mitigated slightly through the addition of flux, however. Electrolytic separation of metals with soluble salts is a lot easier, for example, CuSO4, which can be separated in an aqueous solution. Hope this helped.

    • @SlatelayerTools
      @SlatelayerTools 2 месяца назад

      You're right. A small amount of carbon in the iron does need to be present to make high-quality steel, but this can be added in a later step, at the same time as the other trace metals. This allows more flexibility in what steel is produced, as the manufacturer can dictate whether their product is a high- or low-carbon steel. It also requires significantly less carbon than a regular smelt.

    • @mikeoath9541
      @mikeoath9541 2 месяца назад

      @@SlatelayerTools Yeah, it's exactly what I was thinking of. I just feel like it's super energy inefficient as you said. It will never be an alternative choice to creating steel when it's so much more expensive. It would only be sustainable energy if the electricity provided is solar/wind/hydro based. None of which seems too feasible. This is without considering flux, salt or other chemicals necessary. It's so expensive that it will never be a thing.

    • @Kernith2
      @Kernith2 2 месяца назад

      It's not necessarily energy inefficient. It probably is practically, but so is coal. That's why they do research like this to find a good way to do it
